Researching Your Irish Ancestors Schedule

Delegates will begin the week in the classroom with a "refresher course" in Irish Genealogy.  This course will be designed in such a way that you can hit the ground running when you enter the archives. After this "refresher course" your week will be spent in the archives of Belfast as well as a day spent in the archives of Dublin working alongside our researchers to help you find that elusive Irish Ancestor.

Monday October 7th

8:30 - For delegates staying in the vicinity of the Cathedral Quarter, transport will be provided by the Foundation to bring you to PRONI. The departure point will be Talbot Street (outside the Ramada Encore)

8:45 - For delegates staying closer to PRONI or those of whom are happy to make their own way to their archive we would ask that you be at PRONI for 8:45

09:00 - Welcome by PRONI and UHF

09:30 - Talk by PRONI staff member on PRONI sources and searching & ordering through the electronic catalogue (ecatni).
10:30 - Tea/Coffee Break

11:00 - Registration

11:30 - Tour of PRONI’s search room and reading room, showing how to order documents and access microfilms and publications.

13:00 - Lunch

13:00 - Optional event: Talk on Liberal MP, Sheelagh Murnaghan, 1924 to 1993 (www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/liberal-mp-sheelagh-murnaghan-1924-1993) (subject of a new publication by UHF)

14:00 - Assisted research in PRONI

16:30 - End of assisted research

17:30 - Evening meal

Tuesday October 8th

12:30 - First lunch time talk on Irish Genealogy: Using Church Records

13:00 - Second lunch time talk on Irish Genealogy: Landed Estate Papers

13:30 - Q & A

13:45 - Transport will be arranged and delegates escorted to their chosen archive for afternoon research.

14:00 - Delegates will have the choice to remain in PRONI or visit another Belfast archive. Foundation staff will be present in certain archives in order to assist you with your research but please note their presence at specific archives will depend on the total number of delegates present. 16:30 - End of assisted research

There will be no evening meal scheduled this evening in order to prepare for the early start for some delegates on Wednesday 10th October

Wednesday October 9th

For delegates wishing to research in Dublin

07:15 - Coach will leave PRONI for Dublin

09:00 - Coach will make a comfort stop at Lusk services

10:00 - Delegates will have the option to either research in the Registry of Deeds or the National Archives along with our researchers. Delegates will also be able to research in the National Library, Representative Church Body archive or the holdings of Trinity College, Dublin. Please note that Foundation staff will not be present at these archives but will be happy to offer advice prior to your visits.

13:00 - Lunch

16:00 - Coach will leave Dublin to return to Belfast

18:30 - Evening meal in Belfast

For delegates wishing to research in PRONI

Thursday October 10th

09:00 - Scheduled Consultations

10:00 - Delegates will have the choice to remain in PRONI or visit another Belfast archive. Foundation staff will be present in certain archives in order to assist you with your research but please note their presence at specific archives will depend on the total number of delegates present. 13:00 - Lunch

13:15 - Third lunch time talk on Irish Genealogy -“Have you thought of….?” Some lesser-known sources to examine.

14:00 - Assisted research in PRONI. The Foundation's research team will be there to help you with your research until 17:00. After that time you have the option of staying in PRONI to continue researching until it closes at 8.45pm.

There will be no evening meal scheduled this evening to take advantage of PRONI's late opening.

Friday October 11th

09:00 - Assisted research in PRONI

12:30 - Lunch

12:30 - Fourth lunch time talk on Irish Genealogy

16:30 - End of assisted research

17:30 - Final Evening meal
